Descripción

Reading and writing are two fundamental language skills that must be continuously developed throughout English language education in primary schools. Pupils are exposed to a wide variety of texts for reading and to different text types when learning to write. Yet, when selecting texts to read or models to inspire writing, poetry is often overlooked. But why? Poetry offers a wealth of opportunities for language learning. It supports pronunciation practice through rhythm, rhyme, and repetition; enriches vocabulary; strengthens memory; and provides meaningful linguistic patterns that help learners explore grammar in context (Bland, 2015). Beyond its linguistic benefits, poetry is also a source of enjoyment and creativity. As Read (2007) points out, poetry encourages children to explore language playfully, experimenting with words, sounds, rhythm, and rhyme. Similarly, when teachers plan writing activities, they often focus on genres such as descriptions, stories, recipes, or dialogues. Poetry, however, can be an accessible and highly motivating form of creative writing for young learners. Writing poems allows children to express ideas and emotions while developing confidence in using English. Moreover, as Finlayson (2009) states, “[m]aking poetry is central to developing language and literacy skills”. This practical workshop is designed for English teachers who would like to introduce poetry writing into their classrooms. Participants will discover simple, engaging strategies for creating poems with their pupils and will have the opportunity to experiment with a range of easy-to-use poetic forms and activities that can be immediately transferred to classroom practice. Are you ready to give poetry a place in your English classroom?

Cristina de Vega Benavides

Descripción

The rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into education has created new opportunities for language learning, but it has also raised concerns about student passivity, and the reduction of meaningful interaction. In bilingual and CLIL classrooms, the challenge is not whether AI should be used, but how it can be used to grow rather than replace these processes. This workshop explores how AI can be integrated within cooperative learning structures to promote language development, reflection and critical thinking. Drawing on practical classroom experiences from Primary Education, participants will discover how AI-generated content can become a catalyst for interaction, discussion and deeper learning. Rather than positioning AI as a source of answers, the workshop presents it as a tool that encourages students to analyse, evaluate, improve, and justify ideas collaboratively. Through a range of examples and hands-on activities, participants will experience how cooperative structures such as Think-Pair-Share, Numbered Heads Together, Rally Robin and Round Table can be combined with AI tools to foster meaningful communication and active engagement. The session will also demonstrate how AI can support formative assessment processes by encouraging students to compare feedback, reflect on their learning and make informed decisions about how to improve their work. Special attention will be given to the development of AI literacy and critical digital competence, helping students move beyond simply generating responses to critically evaluating the quality, accuracy and usefulness of AI outputs. By combining the strengths of cooperative learning and AI, this workshop offers practical strategies for maintaining communication at the heart of learning while preparing students to become thoughtful, reflective, and responsible users of emerging technologies in bilingual educational contexts.
